PACKING TIPS

Storage DO's

Here are some tips for storing your stuff, aimed to make your storage experience efficient and stress-free.

  • Store items you really need at the front of the unit. You don't want to be digging through boxes for your cell phone charger.

  • Do not store important documents (deeds, passports, insurance policies, birth certificates). Keep them with you.

  • When you pack your storage unit, create a nice center aisle for easy access to all your stored goods.

  • If you're storing tables and other furniture, remove legs and store tabletops and sofas end to end, to save space. Be sure to wrap chairs and tabletops completely in protective quilts so that nice finishes won't be scratched or nicked. Treat wood with a good polish before storing.

  • Use trashcans to store shovels, hoes and rakes.

  • When storing metal items, to retard rust, wipe all metal surfaces with a rag containing a few drops of machine oil.

  • Hang blankets, draperies, and dress clothes in wardrobe boxes.

  • Invest in storage racks and shelving to maximize space and stay organized

  • Draw and label a map of where everything is located in your storage locker.

  • For better ventilation, leave a few inches of space between your items and the locker walls.

  • Stack similar boxes together.

  • Stack heaviest items on the bottom and lighter items on the top.

  • Stack pictures and mirrors on their sides.

  • Place mattresses on end so they stand straight up.

  • Store sofas on end to conserve space.

Storage DONT's

  • Never store live animals – stuffed animals are fine

  • Never house people – only pictures of them

  • Never store explosives – for the obvious reason of liability

  • Never store flammable liquids or fuel – we know it's temping
for convenience but there is a gas station just up the street.
